Moosewood Vienna Horn Mouthpieces

For the many hornists who perform on the classic Vienna horn, using the appropriate mouthpiece is essential!  The Vienna Horn is the logical extension of the 19th Century Waldhorn, maintaining the true horn tone into the present.  The double horn, developed at the end of the 19th Century, requires a shallower, slightly concave mouthpiece cup to compensate for the horn's lower impedance. Excepting one or two specialty double horns, today's instruments cannot duplicate the depth and tone color of a fine Vienna Horn.

In Schubert's time the "new" valve horn used the Natural Horn mouthpiece; a gradual convex drop from the rim's inner edge to the outlet. As the horn's repertoire demanded greater endurance and volume, as in Wagner, Bruckner and Mahler, mouthpieces with less cubic volume were preferred. The Vienna Horn does not produce its characteristic color with a standard "modern" mouthpiece.

I can make several Vienna Horn mouthpiece variations, all with proper internal/external dimensions.  The size of stem and longer length of the Vienna Horn mouthpiece is matched to the horn's crook.   Threads are standard American 3/4" x 36TPI, as with all Moosewood underparts. Vienna Horn mouthpieces with Paxman threads can also be made.
